The Government of the Sakhalin Region and NovaWind JSC (ROSATOM’s wind power division) signed an agreement to cooperate in wind farm construction projects.

The document was signed by Alexey Belik, Head of the Sakhalin Government, and Alexandr Korchagin, CEO of NovaWind JSC.

The agreement focuses on examining the feasibility of constructing wind generation facilities in the Sakhalin Region and making preparations for the construction of wind farms with a total installed capacity of up to 200 MW to be commissioned in 2024.

“This is a new interesting region for us, it has its own specifics in terms of wind energy projects. The construction of wind farms will have a positive impact on the ecology of Sakhalin, and will also create an extra incentive for the regional development of industries focused on managing and reducing the carbon footprint. I hope that our cooperation will be successful and will make a strong contribution to carbon neutrality in the region,” noted Alexandr Korchagin.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin has set a task to reduce carbon emissions. To achieve this, it is necessary, among other things, to increase the share of energy generated from renewable sources, for example, wind energy. Sakhalin has all the possibilities for this. It is also important to enhance reliability of electricity services to population and economy. The Sakhalin Island power grid is isolated from the mainland, and when any generation failures occur, we cannot count on resupply from the outside. Therefore, we pay special attention to the diversification of energy sources,” said Alexey Belik, Head of the Sakhalin Government.
